The Boley Masonic Temple is a lasting symbol of Black resilience and self-governance. Built in 1912, it was the tallest structure between Oklahoma City and Okmulgee and served as the headquarters for the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge. The temple was a hub for fraternal gatherings, cultural events, and annual pilgrimages of Black Masons from across Oklahoma.

One of the key figures tied to this legacy is Green I. Currin, the first African American to serve in the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature. A prominent Prince Hall Mason, Currin championed Black self-determination and economic independence—values deeply connected to the Masonic Temple’s purpose.

Today, the historic structure has been modified and now serves as Boley’s post office, continuing to be a vital part of the town’s landscape. Though changed, its legacy as a cornerstone of Black excellence and community empowerment remains. The Boley Masonic Temple is part of the Boley Historic District, which is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

In 1932, Herbert C. McCormick became an overnight hero when he defended Boley’s Farmers and Merchants Bank against the infamous Pretty Boy Floyd gang. His quick thinking and bravery stopped a deadly robbery, earning him national recognition.

For his courage, Governor William H. Murray awarded him the honorary title of Major and appointed him to the gubernatorial staff. McCormick’s story is a testament to the fearless spirit of Boley—where history is made, and legends are born.

Fun Fact: Herbert McCormick’s wife was Abigail Barnett McCormick, a woman whose family’s land helped establish Boley, Oklahoma. As the daughter of Creek Freedman James Barnett, she played a key role in building one of the most prosperous all-Black towns in America.

As we enter 2025, Boley is embracing a bold vision for the future while honoring its extraordinary past. Known as one of America’s most successful all-Black towns, we are proud to share the revitalization projects that celebrate our resilience, culture, and historical significance:

✨ Boley Visitor Center, Restaurant, Gift Shop and More: Formally the historic J & L McCormick’s Restaurant, this space will serves as a cultural hub, welcoming visitors, displaying historical exhibits, locally inspired items in the gift shop, and a vibrant dining experience. This project is headed by Tarrance and Jacqueline Floyd (Boley HS Alumni).

✨ Restoration of Boley Museum & Bed and Breakfast: This project provides visitors with a chance to immerse themselves in Boley’s history while enjoying unique, comfortable accommodations in a beautifully restored space.

✨ Restoration of Farmers and Merchants Bank: Led by Project 2020 Foundation, this historic structure, once the economic heart of Boley, is being restored into a community and cultural space that honors the entrepreneurial spirit of the town’s founders.

✨ Boley Historic District: With 14 historic buildings, this district tells the story of a community that thrived against all odds. Each landmark reflects the hope, innovation, and determination that define Boley’s legacy.

✨ Boley’s Place on the Civil Rights Trail: The Civil Rights Trail Marker has been installed, solidifying Boley’s national recognition as a symbol of Black self-reliance and prosperity during segregation. It stands as a testament to the town’s critical contributions to equality and justice.

We are raising funds through partnerships, grant writing, and donations to bring these initiatives to life, preserving Boley’s history while paving the way for future generations.

🌟 Celebrating a Trailblazer: Hortense King McClinton 🌟

Born in 1918 in Boley, Oklahoma, Hortense King McClinton has dedicated her life to social work and education. In 1966, she became the first African American faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, serving in the School of Social Work.

Her father, Sebore Jones King Sr., was a former slave who became a veterinarian, banker, and community leader in Boley, instilling in her the values of education and resilience.

At 106 years old, McClinton’s legacy continues to inspire. In May 2022, UNC-Chapel Hill renamed a residence hall in her honor, recognizing her contributions to the university and the field of social work.

🌱 Building Boley’s Future through Vocational Training 🌱

The Vocational Building in Boley was a beacon of education and empowerment. Since 1910, the town offered practical agricultural training to young men, helping shape a new generation of farmers in Oklahoma. 🧑🏾‍🌾✨

Students received hands-on lessons in farming, learning everything from soil conservation to irrigation techniques. These programs instilled in them not just technical skills but a deep sense of pride and responsibility for their land. 🌾

Through these efforts, Boley’s farmers led the way in preserving their agricultural heritage while ensuring a sustainable future for their community. 🌟

Don’t wait until the last minute – ensure your place at the highly anticipated Historic Boley Rodeo on May 25th by getting your tickets early!

Purchasing your tickets in advance allows us to track attendance. By knowing how many people to expect, we can better plan and allocate resources for a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Furthermore, by reducing on-site ticket sales, we can increase traffic flow and minimize congestion, making your experience even more enjoyable from start to finish.

If you purchased a ticket online , Wristbands will be available for pickup at the announcer stand until 4 pm, and afterward, at the arena from 4-7 pm. Keep an eye out for our dedicated volunteers in lime green t-shirts who are ready to assist you every step of the way. YOU MUST HAVE A WRISTBAND TO ENTER ARENA! Rodeo tickets will be for sale throughout the day.

🚗 Start your morning with the Main Street Car Show presented by Shop Talk at 9 am, featuring classic beauties on display.

🎉 Join the vibrant parade at 3 pm as it winds its way through town, spreading joy and community spirit.

🎶 Then, at 5:30 pm, groove to live performances by Taylor Deneen, Electrohorse, and Willie Jones at the Rodeo Arena.

🤠 And finally, the main event – the adrenaline-pumping Rodeo – kicks off at 7 pm, showcasing thrilling feats and cowboy skills.
